Keyboard and screen reader access

Everything in Wealthru can be reached without a mouse. This article covers the parts that are worth knowing about, whether you use a keyboard because it is faster or because you use a screen reader.

Before you start

  • Nothing here needs turning on. It works on every plan, for every role.
  • On a phone or tablet with a screen reader, the same rules apply to swipe navigation.

Skip straight to the content

  1. Press Tab once when a page loads.
  2. A Skip to content button appears at the top left.
  3. Press Enter.

Your cursor lands in the page content, past the navigation, the search box and the notification bell. The next Tab carries on from there.

Move between sections with the arrow keys

Property, tenancy, Money, Import and the admin console all group their content into tabs.

  1. Press Tab until you reach the tab strip. Only the selected tab is a stop, so you never have to tab through all of them.
  2. Press the Left and Right arrow keys to move between them. On the property page the strip runs down the side, so use Up and Down.
  3. Press Home to jump to the first tab and End to jump to the last.

The section changes as you move, and the link in your address bar changes with it, so reloading or bookmarking the page brings you back to the same section. The Money tabs are separate pages, so there the arrow keys move your cursor and you press Enter to open the one you want.

Menus and dialogs

  • Opening the menu, a preview or a confirmation moves your cursor into it.
  • Tab cycles inside it and cannot reach the page behind.
  • Press Escape to close it. Your cursor returns to the button you opened it from.

When something goes wrong

If a form cannot be saved, the reason appears just below it, is read out straight away, and your cursor moves to it so you can read it with the keyboard. If you are typing when a field is checked, your place is left alone and the message is read out without interrupting you.

On a phone

The property page shows a list of sections instead of a side strip.

  • Choosing a section moves you to its heading, so you hear which one opened.
  • Choosing All sections takes you back to the list, with your cursor on the row you came from.

Good to know

  • Press the question mark key for the full list of shortcuts. See Keyboard shortcuts.
  • Every navigation area is named, so a screen reader can tell the main menu from the breadcrumb trail and the bottom bar.
  • Each page has one main heading, so heading navigation lands somewhere useful.

Troubleshooting

  • Tab jumps somewhere unexpected after I close a dialog. Tell us which dialog. Closing one is meant to return you to the control that opened it.
  • A control is not announced. Tell us the page and the field name. Every input in Wealthru is meant to carry the label you can see.
